ENTREPRENEURS IN ENTERTAINMENT:

Producers, Directors, Hair Stylists, Wardrobe Stylists, Caterers, Prop providers, Set Designers are all entrepreneurial minded persons in one way or another. This list could go much further. However, the point is that entertainment, whether television, film or even music, is an environment full of individual professionals with specialized skills coming together for the purpose of getting the project at hand completed within its projected time and under budget.
Many people are slightly disillusioned about the entertainment business. The perceived glamour, money and fame are usually an illusion created by public relations, promotions and media professionals. It’s really hard work for most people involved and fleeting by nature. On the front end, Actors, Artists and Directors are held in the highest esteem for their roles in a project. They are usually touted as the heroes that bring a project to life. On the back end, the writers, producers, grips, sound, assistants and composers, to name a few are truly the glue that keeps a production together. Ultimately each project takes on a short term life that ends within months, leaving everyone involved on their own, left to find the next sustainable project.
Therefore, to work in the entertainment business, one has to be at least somewhat entrepreneurial minded. The job is not stable. There are no guarantees of how long your stint will last. Your professional skill and reputation are essential in whether you are even considered to work on a project. Lastly, you have the ability to make or break your chances to succeed, just like a true entrepreneur.

Indie Filmmaking: Profitable Business or Hobby

Historically, entertainment tends to fair well even in tough economic times. Yet, the film business has taken a beating along with the rest of the economy. Consumers are reducing their entertainment budgets and turning toward rental income streams more often than the big screen. Additionally, the viewship of online video is steadily rising. So, the question remains is independent filmmaking profitable or a hobby? It depends on your choice of medium and timing. Nevertheless, if its your passion, go for it ...economically.
